Opening the Box
I’m learning to appreciate the lack of sanity here (as a Ghanaian would put it). I’m moved to my community, into the home where I’ll be staying and into the office where I’ll be working. My thoughts are too disorganized to write an organized blog post this time around (a regular occurrence these days) and I feel as though I can better represent myself through disorder at this time. Enjoy!
Touchdown in Tamale
A story belongs to its teller. The story teller controls the medium, the perspective, the message, and all other aspects of the story except the details. This week has been a week worth a story but this storyteller is having trouble owning this story since it takes place in an unfamiliar land with unfamiliar characters; however, the storyteller is bound by perceptions, not by reality.
Exchange program gives student a chance to engineer business solutions
When Lucas Maidens enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering two years ago he had no idea his education would take him to Africa.
A-a-a-a-a-ash
So, as you may have guessed by now, we were supposed to fly to London, but that flight got canceled. The ash cloud is preventing our flight to London from taking off, so we're sitting around the Pearson airport waiting to get our baggage back before heading back to the training house. Here's us chillin' and jammin' out with a couple ukuleles and some kazoos.
Felts and Flipcharts
This page in my story is designed to explore pre-departure training as I've experienced it so far. I don't recommend this post to anyone. All the same my commitment to completeness and my arrogance has me write this highly opinionated post.
Walewale Where?
Did you know that the rain is different in Toronto? It falls indifferently--like it doesn't really matter what is between it and the ground. It doesn't wash away or puddle up. It just falls. It's up to you to not be swept away by the average sized droplets.
And that is how to write a melodramatic teaser to a blog post that doesn't warrant it.
And off we go!
Finals are just about coming to a close, which means summer is fast approaching. Normally at this point, I'd be starting to relax, enjoying the few days of freedom before the summer job starts. But not this year. This year I'm doing more reading for my summer plans that I have been for exams. This summer I will be going to Malawi, a small country in southern Africa, with Engineers Without Borders (EWB). In the fall I was chosen to be one of the U of A's two Junior Fellows (JF's) who will be volunteering in Africa for almost four months.

The new exec has come up with a list of directorships for next year. Getting into a directorship role early is beneficial because it gives you a better chance to start planning and learning about your new role! Below are the directorships available for 2010-2011 - get in contact with the relevant VP if you see something you are interested in! If you are interested in a particular area but don't see a directorship that really grabs you, shoot an email off to the VP to see how else you can get involved!
